A neon and sheet metal sculpture that I made in 1989 is coming up for auction at Sotheby's New York in late February. The photo above shows the installation of three neon and sheet metal sculptures that were installed at the Soho Center for Visual Artists in 1990. The images below are of the piece up for auction, titled "Hatchet Head".
The seller are the Mallins, a couple that collected approximately 1000 pieces of art, much of it outdoor sculpture. Fortunately for me, they were friends of Larry Aldrich, best known for his own Museum, the Aldrich Museum for Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, Connecticut. He supported the non-profit Soho Center in order to offer emerging artists a place to exhibit in New York. Among the artists in their collection are Louise Bourgoise, Carl Andre, Sol Lewitt, Richard Serra, and Deborah Butterfield.
